The Caterpillar 245, introduced in 1974, was powered by the six cylinder turbocharged, 3406 engine with 325 flywheel horsepower. It had a maximum reach of more than forty feet, a digging depth of nearly twenty-six feet and standard bucket capacities from 2 to 3 3/4 yards. The 245 came equipped with a variable flow hydraulic system, hydrostatic track drives and oil cooled disc brakes. After a production run lasting nearly 14 years the 245 was replaced by the Caterpillar 245B in 1988. Estimates put the total production of the 245 front shovel and excavator at more than 4,000 units during that time period.
