In 1974, Caterpillar® introduced the D8K Track-Type Tractor as a replacement for the 270 HP D8H. Realizing an increase in horsepower, the D8K is powered by a turbocharged D342 engine producing 300 net HP @ 1330 RPM. Coupled with a planetary power shift transmission, the D8K is capable of up to 6.8 MPH in forward and 8.4 MPH in reverse.
Featuring hydraulic lever controls for easy ripper and dozer tilt functions, as well as complete hand-lever steering which combines clutch disengagement and braking in the same control, the D8K increases productivity while reducing operating costs. Other improvements over the D8H included a thicker frame for more durability, a higher load handling transmission, and a larger radiator for more efficient cooling.
The rugged D8K bulldozer blades have durable DH-2 cutting edges and end bits, with a single lever controlling all blade movement including tilt. The No. 8 Series D Multi-Shank Ripper allows the choice between 1, 2, or 3 shanks depending on your job conditions.
