Introduced in 1982 as a replacement to the Cat 977L, the 973 features a 3306 Turbocharged Diesel engine mounted in the rear to improve operator sight while also providing a natural balance for the machine with a loaded bucket, eliminating the need for a counterweight. Coupled with a hydrostatic drive, the 973 is quick and responsive, with precise control including variable speeds within set speed ranges. The standard Z-Bar linkage provides the machine with a high breakout force and fast dumping cycles.
Configured with a General Purpose Bucket and 3-Shank Ripper, this 973 has a rated capacity of 3.75 yd³. The hinged-type ripper, which is mounted to each side of the main frame, is ideal for breaking up rock, shale, clay & hard or frozen ground.
