During WWII I was a teenager on the Buhach Ranch near Atwater Ca. We had 4 Caterpillar tractors - a wide gauge D2, a D4 and two D8s that primarily leveled land with 24 yard Carryall scrapers plus dozing the annual San Joaquin River along the edge of our ranch near Weatherby Lake and Manteca Ca. One year we had a real hassle retrieving one of the D8s that accidentally got into the muddy river. I recall the D4 was widely used building borders throughout our almond orchards; and I remain amazed that the driver could pull a rope that caused a small dam at each tree - that is every 24 feet on several hundred acres - for flood irrigation purposes. One other amazing activity was a D8 drivers so small that he had to get up on his knees to operate the cable system handles! One other thing about the D8s was we had only one starter engine for both; and that made it interesting to transfer the starter motor every time one of the D8s had to be shut down for service.
