The Machine
As the onslaught of hydraulic excavators continued to erode the market once owned by cable operated machines in the general construction market, Caterpillar introduced their first excavator that was capable of replacing the larger machines found in pits and quarries.

The Caterpillar 245, introduced in 1974, was powered by the six cylinder turbocharged, 3406 engine with 325 flywheel horsepower.  In comparions, the Cat 225 excavator was a 125 hp machine.   The 245 had a maximum reach of more than forty feet, a digging depth of nearly twenty-six feet and standard bucket capacities from two to three and three quarter yards.

The 245 came equipped with a variable flow hydraulic system, hydrostatic track drives and oil cooled disc brakes.  After a production run lasting nearly 14 years the 245 was replaced by the Caterpillar 245B in 1988.  Estimates put the total production of the 245 front shovel and excavator at more than 4,000 units during that time period.

The Model
The legacy of the Cat 245 lives on in our die-cast replica of this monstrous machine while adding to our growing line of vintage Caterpillar machines in 1:48 scale.  By using the latest in CAD technology CCM was able to make a complete 3D model before proceeding to production.  This process allowed for many details to be included that may not normally be found in die-cast models of this size.

The 245 excavator is equipped with wider flotation tracks ideal for working on soft ground while  the 245 front shovel comes equipped with the narrower tracks suitable for working in quarries and other hard pack environments.

Both machines come equipped with working stick and booms, positionable buckets, detailed hydraulic lines, a fully detailed engine and engine compartment accessible through opening engine bay doors as well as spring tensioners in the track frames, perforated engine covers and finely detailed walkways.

The models are finished with authentic Caterpillar yellow paint and decals.  All of our models are inspected and approved by Caterpillar prior to production.
